Final assignment for HGSE 357- Ecology and Management of Island Wildlife

The final assignment for the HGSW 357 course at the Haida Gwaii Institute was to create a management plan focusing on a wildlife species found on the Haida Gwaii islands. Myself, Amy Hanson, and Emma Hoogland chose to focus on Sorex monticolus, the Haida Gwaii Dusky Shrew. This paper covered background information on the Haida Gwaii Dusky Shrew, their importance to the ermine on Haida Gwaii, how rats on Haida Gwaii influence their populations, their limiting factors, knowledge gaps in research, and our management strategy for the Haida Gwaii Dusky Shrew population. We also had to present our paper to our class, our professor, some Haida Gwaii Institute faculty, and our previous guest speakers. This final project was also open to the public so there were many members of the community in attendance of our presentation. We presented at the Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay in the performance house.
